One of the men charged over one of the biggest hauls of methamphetamine ever seized in Northland wants a change of court venue as he says he would not get a fair trial in Whangarei.
Shane Legg, 30, and Tuara Kingi, 30, will go to trial on charges related to 5.5 ounces of methamphetamine (also known as P), $21,000 in cash, a P-lab, a .22 calibre pistol and stolen property allegedly found when police raided a Hikurangi house on July 22.
Both men are in custody awaiting trial and appeared for a pre-trial process in Whangarei Court on Monday - Kingi in the dock and Legg via audio video link.
Legg's lawyer Christopher Muston filed an application to change the trial venue on the grounds his client was unlikely "to get a fair trial in Whangarei".
Judge Greg Davis further remanded both men in custody until a pre-trial hearing on December 5, at which time the change of venue application would also be heard.
