A man allegedly involved in a carjacking that led police on a long chase has found not guilty by reason of insanity.
The Whangarei District Court has ordered Rameka Hape, 35, be detained as a special patient in a hospital.
Hape had faced three charges of aggravated assault, two of attempting to unlawfully take a motor vehicle, one of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, injuring with intent to injure, reckless driving, failing to stop, and resisting police.
Hape's defence lawyer David Sayes said Hape had pleaded not guilty to all charges.
At a subsequent hearing he was found not guilty on all charges he faced by reason of insanity.
