A fully laden logging truck police say was allegedly going too fast around a corner on Mangakahia Rd narrowly missed two road workers before it tilted sideways and spilt its trailer load of logs.
Police Sergeant Tai Patrick said the uninjured driver was lucky to be alive after the crash, just north of Titoki on Tuesday afternoon.
The load on the truck's rear trailer had propelled forward as the vehicle rammed into a bank, a guard rail the only thing stopping them from crashing through the back of the cab, Mr Patrick said.
Witnesses said the whole right side of the truck went up into the air before all of the wheels hit the ground again.
The two road workers were putting signs out warning of work due to begin near the corner when the truck came around and lost control.
