Ruakaka teams rode a wave of success in the Surf Lifesaving Northern region Inflatable Rescue Boat championships at Waipu Cove on Saturday.
The Ruakaka Surf Lifesaving Patrol came third overall out of the nine clubs competing in the carnival, beaten only by big guns from Muriwai and Raglan.
Ruakaka also picked up a prize for the club with the best IRB development in Surf Lifesaving NZ's Northern region.
"We did well for a small club," patrol deputy chief Sean Cahalane said yesterday.
Ruakaka driver Melissa Batten and crew member Maaike McKernan won bronze in the open women's mass rescue and single rescue events.
A Ruakaka men's team, driver Chan Cahalane and crew member Ryan Hulse, won silver in the under-21 single rescue and combined with Nick Crayton-Brown and Leon Batten to compete in the teams' event, in which Waipu Cove won bronze.
Earlier the Waipu Cove senior A team won two silver medals in assembly and single rescue events and bronze in the mass rescue.
Sean Cahalane said Ruakaka would be sending two under-21 teams to compete in the Surf Lifesaving NZ national championships at Ohope on March 31-April 1.
Ruakaka juniors will compete in surf lifesaving age group championships at Orewa on February 4 and the Northern region district surf lifesaving championships will be held at Ruakaka on February 17-18.
