Lightning strikes smashed windows at Dargaville Hospital last night. Photo / File

A lightning strike shattered two windows and set off fire alarms at Dargaville Hospital yesterday.

Jen Thomas, Dargaville Hospital operations manager said lightning struck the building smashing two corridor windows, about 90cm by 50cm in size, and activated the alarm sending fire crews immediately at 4pm yesterday.

"No one was injured and we've checked everything and nothing else has been damaged," she said.

Ms Thomas said the corridor was empty at the time and fire crews were quickly at the hospital cleaning up the glass and boarding up the windows.

Ms Thomas said she was in her office at the time and although she didn't see the lightning strike she could tell by looking at the dark sky the storm was coming. "It had been fine all day and then at about 3.30 it went grey."
