Whangarei Boys' High School's premier rugby league team is on a mission to pay back to a sponsor who answered a last minute SOS call to cover a shortfall in funding to attend the NZRL Secondary School Nationals.
Last month MultiKai Cooker owner and inventor Doug Andrews stepped in toensure Boys' High could attend the national competition, after the team was nearly forced out of the event. Now, the Boys' High Students are out to repay Andrews' faith.
The teenagers are running a fundraiser on Thursday and are looking for workplaces to pre-purchase $10 hangis.
Confirmation of the quantity of hangis is required by 3pm today, with confirmation also comes an agreement to pay the outstanding amount in full.
Collection will be between 11am and 1pm from Boys' High, with a delivery option also available for large orders.
If you would like to place an order on behalf of your organisation, email rln@nzrl.co.nz with your name, contact number, organisation name, street address, and quantity of hangis. Each hangi includes pork and chicken, plus four veges and stuffing.
MultiKai Cooker's Andrews said it is great to see the students taking charge and following through on their end of the bargain. "I'm a big believer in helping people to help themselves, that's part of the culture that has built the success of the MultiKai Cooker brand," he said. "Rather than giving the money to [Boys' High], we have agreed to guarantee the money to cover the immediate shortfall so they could travel to the tournament."
Andrews is also calling on his Portland Panthers Masters league team to help Boys' High in their cause.
