Otangarei prop Poasa Rankin made them pay after spilling an easy chance earlier, crashing over to extend the lead to 16.
Hora Hora put the ensuing kick off out on the full, gifting Otangarei good field position.
They did not miss out on the opportunity as winger Shaquille Ormsby scored out wide.
Standoff Kurtis Tito added a late half try for Hora Hora as he danced his way through the defence to bring the halftime score to 20-6.
Hora Hora may have thought they were back in it during the break but Otangarei stamped their mark early in the second spell with tries from Linn Hunapo and Rankin.
The home side once again coughed up possession, gifting Otangarei yet another try through centre Jordan Katene.
Katene was highly impressive in the backline, breaking tackles and the line at will while putting in a strong defensive display.
He was in the thick of the action again minutes later to set up a crafty blindside try, putting the Otangarei lead at 42-6.
The game disintegrated for a spell following that try, with both sides losing possession and looking to put on big hits rather than score points.
Tensions boiled over before Rankin, who had carried the ball well all afternoon, was sent for an early shower.
Otangarei took that in stride however, adding a late try to Katene. Halfback Verne Wilson added his fourth goal of the day, cementing the result.
The other two matches threw up highly contrasting results.
Moerewa Tigers racked up a century over Northern Wairoa Bulls in an attacking masterclass.
Northern Wairoa managed a couple of tries for themselves but were unable to stop the onslaught as Moerewa ran out 100-18 winners.
Meanwhile Portland Panthers and the returning Hikurangi Stags battled out a 22-22 draw in Hikurangi's best match since returning to the competition this year.
Both sides slugged it out in a rugged contest but neither could get the win, but they do walk away with a competition point.
Defending champions Takahiwai Warriors had the bye.
