Running at sunrise, climbing mountains before lunch, traversing high ropes in the afternoon and swimming at sundown, he learned just how much he can fit into one day.
"I now have a better understanding of how much time in the day I actually have, and how important it is not to waste any of it," he said.
For the past year Mr McPherson has worked as a supervisor at the He Iwi Kotahi Tatou Trust in Moerewa, a not-for-profit organisation helping create positive futures for the local community's youth.
After a work colleague was unable to go on the course, Mr McPherson was fortunate to go in his place.
"I learned to push myself to the limits on the course. I find now I push the kids to the limit and encourage them to find a better pathway - to get out of the gutter and achieve greater things," he said.
Through his work at the trust he plans to lead outdoor trips including camping, kayaking and other activities, to connect youth with the outstanding beauty of the outdoors rather than sitting at home.
Last year 63 Northlanders enrolled in Outward Bound courses - a 50 per cent increase on the previous year.
Mr McPherson wears his Outward Bound badge proudly pinned to his cap as a constant reminder of what he learned.
"It truly was a life-changing opportunity and wearing my badge reminds me to push, to keep open to opportunities, and grab them with both hands."
