Just when you thought it was safe to put away the raincoat and gumboots - it's not - with wet weather predicted for the weekend.
MetService has issued a severe weather watch for Northland with a complex trough of low pressure due to hit the country late Friday and early Saturday before heading away to the east Saturday night.
Forecasters said a moist northerly flow ahead of the trough was expected to bring a period of heavy rain to northern and western parts of both islands. The heaviest falls are expected about the ranges of Nelson, Buller, Westland and Fiordland, also Mt Taranaki, Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty, with a period of significant rain possible about Northland.
A period of heavy rain is expected for northern and eastern parts of Northland from around midday Friday through to Friday evening and again for a time during Saturday.
Shorter term rainfall amounts could also reach warning criteria during these times (for example 50 to 70mm falling in a 6 to 9 hour period), especially if any thunderstorms develop.
