A High Court judge excused himself from hearing a civil appeal in Whangarei involving former Zion Wildlife Gardens' operator Patricia Busch because of a potential conflict of interest.
Justice Murray Gilbert was scheduled to hear an appeal Mrs Busch filed against Whangarei law firm Henderson Reeves Connell Rishworth, which is trying to recover $34,000 in legal fees, plus interest, from her.
The company is also acting for Auckland barrister Tony Drake - allegedly owed $88,000 and interest - because, under law, barristers cannot sue.
Justice Gilbert was a partner in Auckland-based Gilbert/Walker until last year and his former work colleague Campbell Walker had acted for a company than ran the lion park.
He was asked to come to Whangarei after a late re-scheduling and found out about the appeal yesterday morning.
