The Mick Griffin Memorial Trophy returned to the wood chopping scene in fine fashion after a 20-year hiatus, featuring at the Ngati Hine Axemans Carnival.
Stratford's Jack Jordon was rewarded for an outstanding performance in the 425mm underhand chop, earning himself the Mick Griffin Memorial Trophy at Hukerenui Tavern.
Jordan won the division by an impressive 20 seconds over Jesse Whitehead, with fellow New Zealand chopping representative Nathan McDonald in third place.
Cherry Daly, the late Griffin's granddaughter, said it was an impressive display.
"He also chopped into third place in the underhand handicap event despite being on a handicap of 73 seconds," she said.
