An injured man assaulted by a group of four in a central city Whangarei carpark stumbled into a women's club where the members called police for help.

It was one of two aggravated robberies that happened in Whangarei last night.

Whangarei police Detective Senior Sergeant Dene Begbie said a 36-year-old man was walking through Forum North carpark about 9pm when he was assaulted by four men who demanded money from him.

Following the assault the injured man stumbled to a gathering of WINGS (Women's International Newcomers Group) in Rust Avenue.

The club's members called Police and St John Ambulance. The man remained in Whangarei Hospital in a stable condition.

Earlier in the night two men armed with weapons went into the Onerahi Foodmarket about 6.30pm.

The offenders demanded money and cigarettes from the two store owners, a man aged 29, and a 22-year-old woman. The woman handed over the items and then one of the offenders struck the man with a weapon.

Both offenders fled. The man was taken to Whangarei Hospital with a head injury and was discharged this morning.
