The Salvation Army Food Bank has been inundated with donations following an appeal to the public last week, as the organisation that helps those in need fell on hard times itself.
Food Bank supervisor Gay Matoe said the public response to last Wednesday's Northern Advocate story about low stock levels in the food bank had been "incredible and very humbling".
Ms Matoe estimated that on Thursday last week alone "100 if not more" people arrived with food.
"Even a couple who had got a food parcel a few weeks back came to the side door with a [car] boot full of groceries and said we helped them when they had nothing."
Every donation was appreciated, from people who brought a couple of cans of baked beans to those who arrived with a trailer full of food, she said.
