About 300 children from 12 primary schools in Whangarei will descend upon the Whangarei Hockey Centre today, celebrating the end of the Small Sticks hockey season at a Festival Day.
In total, 52 Mini Sticks and Kiwi Sticks hockey teams will play round robin tournaments between 10am and 2.30pm.
Hockey Northland participation manager Brad Pitman is stoked with the growth of the tournament in the past year, saying it should be an action packed day.
"Last year at the Festival Day we had about 35 teams. To have 52 this year is a big increase," Pitman commented. "Three schools have 10 teams each."
The school children will have an opportunity to get the autographs of well-known players Ella Gunson and Black Sticks' Stacey Michelsen.
