The sport played in any weather was certainly true of hockey over the weekend.

While the premier grades take a two-week break as the Northland under 18 sides head to the national tournament this week, the reserve grades continued their competitions in pouring rain on Thursday and Friday.

On a flooded turf on Thursday night, Maungakaramea took advantage of a depleted Whangarei Boys' High School side to get the closest result against the school team this season.

With players resting before the tournament, Boys' High had to call in reinforcements and were held to their lowest score of the season when they beat Maungakaramea 4-2.

In the other reserve men's matches, Springfield stormed home in the second half to beat Hora Hora 6-2 after being down 2-1- at half time and remain in third place on the table.

Kamo High School held Bream Bay to a 2-all draw to stay above them on the ladder while Mangapai were probably thankful they had the bye.

In the reserve A women's competition, the top two sides couldn't be separated on Friday night.

Old Girls went up early in the grudge match but top of the table Hikurangi struck back before halftime to draw level, and that is how the score stayed.

Maungakaramea took their time to get going in a 4-0 win over a Kamo High School side also missing players rested before tournament.

Whangarei Girls' High School and Springfield played out a nil-all draw on a soaked turf while Parihaka put away Mangapai 3-0.
