Whangarei business Currie Electrical has secured the naming rights of Hockey Northland's new $1.8 million third turf on Kensington Park.

The turf will be known as the Currie Electrical Turf and should be completed by the end of January following a three month construction project.

Currie Electrical directors Tanya and Brett Currie are proud to be increasing their involvement with Hockey Northland.

"We have been involved with Hockey Northland for years and now it is really great to be committing to sponsoring the new turf, we are really excited about it," Tanya said. "We are passionate about hockey, it is such a great sport and so much fun for the family. I have personally played since I was five years old. This new turf is an exciting development and we have been involved in the electrical work for it, and to show our appreciation, we have chosen to sponsor the turf."

Hockey Northland chief executive officer Grant McLeod commented that the new sponsorship agreement for the Currie Electrical Turf showed the passion and dedication of the local community and their level of support for the popular family sport.

"The Currie Electrical Turf will open us so many more opportunities for us to hold bigger competitions and to ease scheduling issues," McLeod said. "We thank Tanya and Brett Currie and we look forward to working with them into the future."

The turf received a mid-winter present from the Whangarei District Council of $1 million.

It will provide the equivalent of 11 grass grounds and take the pressure off organisers who struggle to offer turf time, with busy practice and game schedules restricting the game's ability to increase player numbers.
