Motorists on Port Marsden Highway had a close call yesterday when three vehicles crashed and a logging truck rolled, spilling logs on to the highway.
The truck slid off the road as a result of a crash involving three vehicles at the intersection of Port Marsden Highway and Salle Rd at around 10am yesterday, said Whangarei police Senior Constable Warren Bunn. A sedan heading northbound on Port Marsden Highway was waiting to turn right into Salle Rd when it was hit from behind by another vehicle, Mr Bunn said.
The sedan was shunted into the southbound lane, where it was hit by another vehicle heading south. "As a result of the crash, the logging truck has slid off the road. Logs ended up on the north, and some parts of the southbound lanes."
Three ambulances attended but Mr Bunn said injuries were minor. Diversions were put in place to close Port Marsden Highway for more than an hour.
Mr Bunn said the crash was likely to have been caused by driver error by one or more of the parties. Interviews would take place over the next few days.
