It's called rockquest, but an acoustic duo playing pop with their own twist took out the Smokefreerockquest Northland Regional Finals.
"Luke and Amberly" from Kamo High School - Luke Rielly on acoustic guitar and vocalist Amberly Shepherd - shone out against competing bands to win the Smokefreerockquest regional final at Forum North on Saturday night.
Amberly said the couple have been going out for over a year, and playing music together for the same amount of time.
"I write the lyrics and Luke writes the music," she said after the win. "One of our songs tonight was about a fight we had and the other was about music and performing, really our songs can be about pretty much anything."
Amberly described their sound as pop "with our own twist" and said the duo were serious about making a career out of their music.
