With all the attention on Auckland's growth and associated transport and housing problems, more focus should be made on shifting population growth away from Auckland to neighbouring towns and cities.
With so much of New Zealand being largely empty population wise, it doesn't make sense to have so many people trying to live in the Auckland region, which is now causing so many problems.
Government intervention is needed to encourage more businesses and industry to establish in centres outside of Auckland, as well as creating satellite suburbs in towns along the railway lines leading out of Auckland.
Relocating Auckland's port to Whangarei and upgrading the North Auckland railway would help encourage more growth and development in Northland where it is needed and there is ample room for growth.
With the rollout of high speed fibre internet there is no reason why so much of the country's population and businesses need to be located in Auckland. The growth needs to be spread out nationwide.
