How incredibly disappointing to read our local SPCA is under such financial stress, despite the commitment of its dedicated manager, staff and volunteers. This should be a huge concern to all Whangarei residents, especially animal lovers.
Rather than the continuing, tiresome squabble over the old Harbour Board/regional council's derelict building at the Town Basin (in excellent condition when acquired in 2003), please let's see some similar passion to benefit the creatures who share our environment (and too frequently suffer at the hands of uncaring owners).
Sure a city this size can find 500 citizens who have enjoyed the unconditional love of a pet over many years to donate an AP of say, $50/month towards the SPCA's operating cost?
Can your household budget stretch to dropping a can of pet-food in the Blue Cross bins for the SPCA at every supermarket? A group of business owners might share the monthly garbage costs (tax deductible) - are there 12 of you out there, for one month each?
The council clearly has a rates remission policy to benefit charitable organisations that work in the community, yet you report that requests for reduction in rates and rubbish costs were "to no avail".
