Burning "rubbish" was something done in the "old" days when we didn't know about air quality or the ozone layer. Fourteen people died in Whangarei in 2008 due to bad air quality. I couldn't find more stats. Maybe someone else knows them.
There are chippers now available for purchase or hire. Safer all around.
Large particle matter such as that from smoke can cause allergic reactions. Smoke on the washing means re-washing to those who are allergic.
Smoke in the air means some people cannot breathe.
