The red, white and blue; our historical uniting colours depict the now global unity of the Commonwealth and has done so since our Irish brothers in the 1400s AD, which is the red diagonal cross on white - St Patrick's.
The white diagonal cross on a blue background is the flag of our Scottish folk - St Andrew's created in the 1700s. The upright Red Cross on white is the St George's of England from 1247 - from the Grand Union Flag of 1605 to the Union Jack in 1801 and used by the Navy since Charles I in 1634.
Our "ensign", cornered now, honoured Down Under with celestial signage on the deep of Pacific Blue depicts not just our centuries of history but our togetherness globally for accepting refugees from all nations in turmoil. We should think globally for, fragmented, we fall.
The Maori Battalion, in fact all of our soldiers over the centuries, have fought for peace and liberty and this flag should remain as long as our regent is in office.
Only when we become a republic should we even contemplate another flag, for without the royal head this would mean the severance of all uniting ties with the Commonwealth; with the disintegration of the Treaty of Waitangi also, with all that entails. We are global.
