Our democratic rights are being seriously eroded and there is much concern over this.
Here are suggestions for measures that should be put in place before any other legislation is dealt with by our newly elected Government. This part of politics is above political parties. It has to do with how Parliament is run; how it functions for the people as a whole.
• The recommended changes to MMP to be enacted.
• No urgency to be taken without a 75 per cent agreement of the Whole of Parliament.
• All legislation to take account of, and comply with, The Bill of Rights.
• All legislation and agreements to be openly debated in Parliament. No legislation or agreements to be signed in secrecy.
These measures are a minimum requirement towards re-establishing the rights of the people to have a say in their Government. One million voters not voting is an indication of serious problems.
At the very least it shows people no longer have faith in Parliament to represent them: If indeed it can be said to represent the people with so many abstaining.
