A cash-laden security van and a logging truck collided in Northland, leaving two security guards with minor injuries but no Hollywood-style scenes of hundred-dollar notes blowing down the highway.

The driver's door was crushed but the money remained secure. The cash was transferred to another secure van, which was quick to arrive. The crash occurred on State Highway 1, near the top of Okaihau Hill, about 10.30am yesterday, as the Security North van headed south and the empty Kaitaia Transport logging truck travelled north.

Sergeant Dan Williams of Kaikohe police said the cause of the crash was being investigated but the van may have crossed the centre line. Fatigue was a possible factor. The guards were shaken so would be interviewed more fully later.

"If you're feeling tired, pull over and have a rest," Mr Williams said.

The crash was just a few hundred metres from Okaihau Fire Station. Deputy fire chief Jack Winwood said the two security guards were treated at the scene by St John Ambulance for minor injuries. The truck driver was unhurt.

The firefighters' main task was managing traffic on the busy stretch of highway.

The road remained open after the accident, with both vehicles able to be pulled to the side.

A Security North spokeswoman said: "We're just happy that no one was seriously hurt."
