Signs that have popped up around Whangarei advertising free car removal are part of a plan to clean up the streets.
The business which offers to remove useless vehicles is already a great success in Auckland where around 27,000 old cars were picked up last year.
Scott Brown worked for the Auckland Broken Car Collection Company and decided to start a branch in Whangarei.
"We will collect any car within 50km of Whangarei, as long as it has an engine and a gear box, and then we sell it for scrap metal.
"We found that people abandon cars because it's too expensive to get rid of them, but our service is completely free.
"I think it's really important to make our streets look better by getting rid of old useless vehicles."
Mr Brown says he has collected over 180 cars in the area since he began operating on February 1.
