A 7-year-old girl remains in Auckland's Starship Hospital after being hit by a car on State Highway 10 at Cooper's Beach.
The accident occurred about 3pm on Monday, leaving her with multiple injuries understood to include a leg broken in two places, a broken wrist, two broken ribs, a knock to the head and lacerations.
The injured girl was taken by ambulance to nearby Mangonui Fire Station, from where the Northland Electricity Rescue Helicopter flew her to Whangarei Hospital.
She was later transferred by helicopter to Auckland, where a hospital spokesman said she was in a ward and in a stable condition.
A police spokesman said the girl had been feeding horses on a property beside the highway when friends called to her from the other side of the road. She ran across to them into the path of a car.
