Four firearms kept in a safe have been stolen from a Northland home in the latest in a string of burglaries involving guns.

Police confirmed four firearms, including two shotguns, were stolen as well other household items, from a property in Kauri, just north of Whangarei yesterday.

The burglary was reported to Whangarei police about 10am but is believed to have happened about 8am. The guns were kept securely in a safe inside the house.

Police were in the Kauri area shortly after they were notified, looking for a vehicle and asking locals if they had noticed any suspicious activity.

Last week Northland police issued a warning to firearm owners to review their security and ensure their weapons are well locked up after a spate of burglaries targeting guns.

Four shotguns, two air rifles, three firearms and ammunition were stolen in three separate burglaries in Northland during the previous weekend.

Police said it was not yet known if the burglaries were linked, but the common denominator was the theft of firearms.

Four brand new shotguns were stolen from a residential property in Ruawai sometime on Sunday or Monday last week. Police said the weapons may not have been stored securely, which was a concern.

Between Friday and Monday three firearms and ammunition were stolen from a gun-safe in a garage at a residential Ruatangata West property and two air rifles were also stolen from a property in Mangawhai. The air rifles had been stored behind an office door, police said.

Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
