Despite no athlete taking to the water, a world rowing record has been set at the Whangarei Rowing Club.
Fitness fanatic doctor Vicky Bruce-Miller and North Island silver medallist rower Ashton Lovell teamed up to beat the 100km tandem indoor record.
It took the pair 6h 20m 57s - alternating each kilometre - to beat the previous time, held by a French team, by seven minutes.
Ms Bruce-Miller described the experience as "an unhappy blur" made easier by the dozens of friends and family members who stopped by the club to cheer the pair on. "I was at the gym this morning and heard that [rowing machine] chain pulling and it almost made me want to vomit," Ms Bruce-Miller said two days after the feat.
The GP last year rowed across Cook Strait and back, smashing the previous record.
