One person died at the scene and a seriously injured patient was airlifted to Whangarei Hospital after a collision between a motorbike and a car on the Karikari Peninsula in the Far North.
It is understood the deceased person was the pillion passenger on the motorcycle.
Another person was taken by St John Ambulance to Kaitaia Hospital and one was treated at the scene and discharged following the crash near a single lane bridge on Inland Rd about 300 metres past the State Highway 10 intersection, at about 4.40pm today.
A fire crew crew worked for an hour to help free one of the passengers who was trapped in the car.
While St John ambulance staff attended the injured, fire fighters isolated a landing zone for the NEST helicopter to pick up the most seriously injured patient.
Both lanes of the road, near a single lane bridge, were closed for an hour, with traffic controllers opening one lane sporadically to allow the build-up of vehicles through.
