Far North District Council has voted to change the way its elected representatives are chosen.
The council has ditched the First Past the Post (FPP) political system and is replacing it with the Single Transferable Vote method (STV).
At its last meeting councillors voted to adopt STV when the district's next mayor, councillors and community boards are elected in the 2022 and 2025 local body elections.
FPP has been used by Far North District Council for many years and is a system most electors are familiar with. It is used by the majority of councils across New Zealand.
STV is a "proportional" electoral system used by 11 out of 78 local authorities during the 2019 elections. In Northland the Kaipara District Council and Northland District Health board both use STV. Whangārei District and Northland Regional councils both use FPP.
