The colourful Indian cultural experience that is the Diwali Festival takes place in Whangarei tonight.
Organised by members of the Northland Indian community, proceeds from the event at Whangarei Intermediate School will be donated to the Hare Krishna-associated Food For Life Trust.
The event will start at 6.30pm and feature traditional music and dance - from southern Indian to Bollywood. Indian vegetarian food on offer will include dinner cooked by the Hare Krishna community, which will be served at about 7.30-8pm.
Entry and the delicious tastes of Indian cuisine will cost $5, with children under 5 free.
Also known as Deepavali and the "festival of lights", Diwali is an ancient Hindu festival that spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair.
