An empty school bus and car collided on a corner trapping the driver of the car and blocking a Northland road this morning.
Whangarei police Senior Sergeant Cliff Metcalfe said the crash occurred near the junction of Ngunguru Road and Coalhill Lane in Kiripaka at 7.10am. It was on a corner know by locals as "Murphy's corner" and is about 12km north east of Whangarei.
The man, who was taken to Whangarei Hospital with serious injuries, was freed from the car just after 8am, Mr Metcalfe said.
The driver of the school bus, which was heading towards Ngunguru, was not injured.
The car, travelling towards Whangarei, appeared to have sustained significant damaged.
