It may have started with a car. Who knows whether it was dumped, or left there after an accident?
According to visitor Emma Lamont-Messer, there were at least three cars. That's surely not an accident?
There also seems to be some whiteware, and enough rubbish to cover "two netball courts",according to Emma whose partner complained to police after the couple found the dump during a stay in Northland.
The dump site is on a road reserve owned by Far North District Council on Ngaiotonga Rd. The road passes through Ngaiotonga Scenic Reserve, administered by the Department of Conservation. The dump is being investigated, and won't be cleared quickly. It seems it is a lot easier to dump the rubbish than it is to retrieve it from what is a steep site, difficult to access.
The Far North District Council has had at least three complaints from the public about this site and says dumping has been going on for several years. A spokesperson declined to comment on the methodology of the investigation, but it would make sense to open a few bags and sift through the rotting evidence.
