Dwayne Tainui

Dwayne Tainui

Whangarei's Dwayne Tainui might make a mean flat white at Indulge Cafe during the day, but when he enters the Independent Wrestling Initiative ring as Tempest, as he did last Friday night, things get a little frothy.

1 Describe yourself in three words?

Ambitious. Loyal. Hard-working.

2 What is the most important advice you have ever been given?

It would probably be the example given to me by my mother, as instilled by her parents, to work hard, stay healthy, look after your family and those close to you and to treat others the way you would expect to be treated yourself.

3 What's your day job?

I currently am a partner in Indulge Cafe with my mother. I'm the head barista and 2IC.

4 How did you get involved in wrestling?

I've had a love for wrestling since I was a teenager and was able to watch it on free to air TV back in the day.

I watched a company called World Championship Wrestling (WCW). I shared this passion with a schoolmate Bryan, and we came up with the Independent Wrestling Initiative. Years later Bryan was able to start IWI in Whangarei so I got involved straight away. We just had our debut show on Friday night and it was amazing.

5 Who would play the part of you in a movie about your life, and why?

All my favourite actors are the ones I grew up watching, so they are all a little old to play me, so I'd have to go with Henry Cavill (Man of Steel). Good actor, good looker. He'd make me look good.

6 What album is playing on your stereo/computer at the moment?

I have the Static X album Cult of Static playing. Good stuff.

7 When it's been a full-on week, what is your favourite way to unwind?

When I can find time, a good trail walk or run, a jam session. Or a good action or sci-fi film with good food and good company.

8 As a child, who or what did you want to be when you grew up? And why?

I've always wanted to be a rock star. I still think about it from time to time. I love good music and have been involved with musicians and church music teams for years now and there is nothing quite like performing live music in front of a bunch of people, it's a great feeling.

9 Tell us something that most people don't know about you.

I love going to secondhand shops and garage sales and I have collections of really random things.

10 What is the one thing you could not live without each day?

That would have to be music. I think life without a good soundtrack would be flat and boring. It's the universal language and the one thing that us humans all share and connect with.
