An 80-year-old Kaitaia man who was found asleep at the wheel of his car, with the lights on, in the middle of Oxford St at 10.40pm on New Year's Day told police he thought he had made it home.

"He wasn't even close," a police spokesman said. The man, who recorded 814 micrograms per litre of breath, was charged with driving with excess alcohol and had his car impounded for 28 days. The new legal limit is 250mcg.
