A spate of drink-driving one evening in Whangarei this week has police wondering why people drive home rather than "kip on a couch".
A 51-year-old man who was stopped in Old Onerahi Rd, Whangarei, on Wednesday night registered a blood alcohol level of 957mcg of alcohol per litre of breath, nearly four times over the 250mcg limit. Facing his third or subsequent charge of driving with excess breath alcohol, the man is due to appear in Whangarei Court on June 10.
A 23-year-old man stopped on Kamo Rd at 10pm on Wednesday was also nearly four times over the limit, at 943mcg. He is due in court on June 17.
Later that night a 46-year-old woman stopped by police in Tarewa Rd blew 476mcg and a 50-year-old woman in Mill Rd blew 524mcg.
Whangarei police spokeswoman Sarah Kennett said the string of Wednesday night incidents that followed "quite a few" caught over the weekend was the result of regular patrolling, not a targeted drink-driving programme.
