The dog carrying a cat mystery remains unsolved.

The dog carrying a cat mystery remains unsolved.

A dog carrying a cat caused a traffic problem on a Whangarei city street.

Police were called to Manse St near Whangarei Girls High School about 2.30pm yesterday when motorists reported seeing a dog carrying a cat.

Whangarei police Sergeant Tai Patrick said initially the dog was seen standing over the cat and it was not clear if the cat was alive or dead at that stage.

Police alerted animal control about a husky-looking dog and were told a member of the public had lifted the cat off the road. The dog was last seen drinking water out of the gutter.

Calls were also logged with animal control with people saying they had seen a dog standing by a cat, or even guarding it. The dog, which was reported missing earlier in the day, was found nearby and taken to the Whangarei pound.

The owners had been identified and animal control were investigating. The cat had not been located late yesterday.
