Entries close next week for equestrian and stock events at the Whangarei Agricultural and Pastoral Society Summer Show, to be held at Barge Park in Maunu on December 7 and 8.
More than $30,000 in prizemoney will be up for grabs in the 327 equestrian classes and 110 livestock classes at the show, including a new $250 prize for the champion young handler in the calf club ring. The new prize is an extension of the society's support for calf club activities in 17 schools and the annual Central Calf Club day which had 130 schoolchildren presenting calves, lambs and goats for judging at Barge Park yesterday.
Similar cash prizes will be offered for the rider who wins the Sloane Brothers Memorial Jump equestrian event at the Summer Show and for the exhibitors of the champion dairy and beef cattle.
More than 2000 entries are received in the show's equestrian section annually and society chief executive Malcolm McKerrow said top national judges would be coming up from the South Island to rule on horses and riders performing this year.
He called on competitors to get their equestrian and livestock entries in before November 15 as late entries would not be accepted.
