Also Sunday's gig will be on the golf club's practice fairway - not the clubhouse - and Dobbyn says the outdoors environment should lead to a great occasion for fans and performers alike.
And while Dobbyn does play a bit of golf occasionally, he's unlikely to be bringing his clubs from his Mangawhai bach to get a round in ahead of the show.
''No way. I have played a little bit of golf and used to play at the Mangawhai Golf Club, but I realised I only played a couple of rounds a year which didn't justify the $250 membership fee.''
He expects his band to be in top form for Waipu Rocks having recently supported Bryan Adams.
''We will be a finely-tuned machine by the time we get to Waipu. We've been having some great gigs lately.''
If there was a double album released of classic Kiwi songs, Dobbyn could well take up one side with his songs that have been a soundtrack for generations of Kiwis and many of the songs will be performed on Saturday. And these days, there's a big cross section of people coming to his shows.
''The younger people have been listening to their parents' music and finding me in their back catalogue and then coming along to the shows. It's particularly relevant for them when they are overseas. They hear the songs and it reminds them of home.''
Dobbyn has written the soundtrack to Kiwi lives, with a string of hits including 'Beside You', 'Be Mine Tonight' 'Language', 'Outlook for Thursday', 'Loyal', 'Whaling', 'Kingdom Come', 'It Dawned On Me', 'Guilty', 'Devil You Know', 'Slice of Heaven', 'Magic What She Do', 'Oughta Be in Love' , 'Welcome Home'. He has won more Music Awards and Silver Scrolls than any other New Zealand artist.
He recently recorded Welcome Home in te reo Maori and found the experience fulfilling and rewarding.
"It's the first time I've done that, but it was a wonderful experience. It's been a great way for me to learn more about the language and culture. It's a beautiful (version of Welcome Home) and I think people will really like it,'' Dobbyn said.
He was delighted to know that teen thrash metal band Alien Weaponry, who have made headlines for their own te reo metal songs, hailed from Waipu.
''It's great what they are doing and they are really making waves.''
Saturday's concert would open with Tim & Ra at 4.30pm, followed by Brendon Thomas and the Vibes, then Stellar* and Dave Dobbyn headlining.
There will be no camping on the golf course, but there will be buses running from Kamo, Whangarei, Waipu and Mangawhai. Tickets for the R18 show cost $95.
