Cricket: Shield games resuming

For an upset to take place in the Dargaville Shield this weekend some mighty performances will be needed to knock Whangarei North off the top of the table.

Whangarei North have one hand on the newly revamped Dargaville Shield after most of last weekend's cricket was washed out, meaning teams lost one day in their two-day matches.

The lost day means the race for the title has tightened up and several finishes could eventuate depending on what happens.

If Mid Western beat Whangarei North then they will win the shield, but if a draw comes from their match then all of a sudden Whangarei South or Rodney are in with a chance if they can produce an outright win.

Last weekend only 32 overs were played, those coming from Whangarei South's game against Rodney.

At the end of day one Whangarei South were 69 for one, with Chamodh Peiris top-scoring with 36 from 87 deliveries. The only wicket to fall was that of Brad Kneebone, who was run out by Findlay Buchanan for 31 off 101.

Peiris' innings was the only one to produce a boundary, picking up one four from his time at the crease.

Matches will resume tomorrow at 10.30am.

Meanwhile, junior cricket started last weekend.
