Whangarei Boys' High School Year 9 and 10 cricketers have proved their worth against their big city rivals by winning the Russell Glackin Cricket trophy.
The team won all their matches against Kelston Boys' High School, Rangitoto College and defending champions Westlake Boys' High School for a clean sweep in last week's round robin tournament.
The win means Whangarei now challenge Westlake Boys' High School as the most successful school in the competition's history, cricket master Russell Smith said.
"We've now won it as many times as Westlake Boys' I think, so that's developing into quite a rivalry - both schools have opened something of a gap between themselves and the other participating schools in terms of wins," Smith said.
The competition was started by former Westlake Boys' High School teacher Russell Glackin, who was also one of the motivating forces behind establishing the national secondary schools cricket competition, the Gillette Cup.
