A road has closed in Helena Bay, northeast of Whangārei, after a serious crash involving a pedestrian.
Police were called to the crash involving a car and pedestrian on Kaiikanui Rd, at about 11.15am on Thursday.
The road will be closed while emergency services work at the scene.
A police spokesperson has asked people to please avoid the area if possible.
Alternative routes are available through Helena Bay Rd, Whananaki North Rd and Pigs Head Rd.
Kaiikanui Rd is an unsealed and narrow rural road. Part of the road is used by Te Araroa Trail walkers.
Earlier on Waitangi Day, emergency services also attended a crash at nearby Whakapara.
The single-car crash on State Highway 1, north of Hikurangi, occurred about 7am.
Police, Fire and Emergency and Hato Hone St John attended, although no one was hurt. KiwiRail was also informed after the car ended up on the railway lines.
Further north, police also attended a single-vehicle crash in Haruru, near Waitangi about 5am.
One person suffered moderate injuries but the road was cleared by about 5.40am, police said in a statement.
Before Waitangi Day, Northland police urged motorists to prioritise safety.
Northland road policing manager Inspector Anne-Marie Fitchett said road users could expect to see patrols anywhere and at any time to deter everyone from any risky behaviours.
