An artist’s impression of a children’s play park Maungaturoto community groups want to set up in the town.

Maungaturoto community groups will go to the Kaipara District Council today to ask if they can transform an empty ratepayer-owned section in the town into a children's playground.

Kaipara commissioners' chairman John Robertson heard about the idea and will go to today's council meeting to see if he can gain support of all three commissioners, spokesman Carl Miller said.

Mr Miller said the playground would be a place for local children to play, but also somewhere people passing through the town could stop off at.

He said the section is about 4000 sq m and has a 30-year-old pohutukawa tree on it which will need to be chopped down if it's to become a section for a house, if the council sell it.

"We think turning it into a playground wold be better for the town than the council selling it for a house," he said.

He said if the groups secured the land for the playground, fundraising would begin in earnest.
