There'll be more muscle on display than in a Mr Universe contest at a Whangarei firm on Saturday.
But there'll be no fake-tans or rippling biceps - the prime beef on display at Turners Auctions is in the form of 29 slabs of finely-tuned American muscle car.
The entire collection of 29 iconic American cars - and a 1975 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow and 1974 Jaguar XK6 - belonging to the late Richard (Dick) James are going under the hammer on Saturday.
Ten per cent of the vendor's profit will be donated to North Haven Hospice, which helped care for Mr James in his final days.
Turners Whangarei manager Rees Daley said there had been a lot of interest, both nationally and internationally, in Mr James' collection. The auction could raise several hundred thousand dollars, with some very rare examples on offer.
Probably the rarest, though it possibly won't go for the most, is a 1965/67 Rambler Marlin, but other classics include a 1983 Pontiac Trans Am 25th Anniversary Daytona 500T/Top; 1984 Cadillac El Dorado Barritz Convertible; two 1980 Pontiac Turbo Trans Am Firebird 4.9litre T/Tops; 1974 AMC Matador 2 Door; 1975 AMC Matador X and a 1986 Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenue Edition.
Mr James and his late wife, Val, imported the cars from the US and he intended to fully restore them and get them registered for driving on New Zealand roads, but not all had been brought up to scratch before he died from a brain tumour in July. Mrs James died from cancer in 2008.
His collection of muscle cars have been stored in a purpose-built shed at McLeod Bay, but his children are now selling them.
Saturday's auction starts at 1pm and Mr Daley said it will be streamed live on the website www.turners.co.nz so anybody can watch the action unfold or bid.
