Several overnight burglaries have police prompting Northlanders to ensure their house is locked up if they are heading out over the holiday season.

A Whangarei police spokesman said overnight Monday there had been at a fair number of burglaries reported in Whangarei alone, including in Raumanga and a "fair amount" in Kamo and Tikipunga and some in rural areas such as Mangakahia.

Police said during the holiday season when punters were heading out of town or away to beaches it was a reminder for people to ensure their belongings were locked away securely.

"People need to lock up and ensure the house is safe," he said. "When people go away they should ensure they have someone looking after their house. If they have timed lights turn those on and just do whatever you can to make it look like you're home," he said.
