Cruel thieves kill birds
A Whangarei couple are devastated after cruel thieves broke into their aviary, beheaded a canary, killed three others and stole 25, plus two silver quails. Whangarei police Acting Sergeant Conan Brown said the aviary at the Kensington property was shut but not padlocked. The owners said the theft happened between 2pm on Tuesday and 8am Wednesday. They were extremely upset to find someone had treated the small birds so cruelly. They suspected the thieves may try and sell the birds either to pet shops or online.

Up to four people, in a stolen vehicle, went to the Z service station on Porowini Ave and forced open an automatic door between 3.30am and 5.15am on Monday. One of the people jumped over the counter and jimmied a cupboard and stole an unknown quantity of cigarettes. The car, which was stolen from outside a Kensington house the night before, was recovered a short time after the service station was broken into.

They went through the kitchen into the bar area where bottles of spirits, wine and beer were taken before an alarm sounded. A police dog and handler were called but unable to find a track. A box of beers was left outside the business.
