A freedom camping bylaw is planned to manage human waste, litter, fires and other problems associated with people pitching tents or staying in vehicles in Kaipara areas not designated for camping.
Bylaw proposals are being prepared by Kaipara District Council staff to set out camping rules and provide the means to deal with any health and safety issues that may arise.
Public consultation on the proposals is expected to begin in March next year with the bylaw adopted about July.
A report by policy planner Paula Hansen considered by the commissioners governing Kaipara during a council meeting on the Otamatea Marae at Batley last week included a proposed bylaw setting out where freedom camping could take place on council-controlled or managed land in the district.
The proposed bylaw would allow up to two vehicles to be set up for a night's camping between 6pm and 8am along the Strand at Whakapirau, in the carpark area at Paparoa, at the Totara St carpark in Dargaville, in the parking area at the end of Pouto Rd and in front of the public toilets at the end of Aranga Rd.
