Broadwood Area School pupils could teach their elders a thing or two about respecting the environment, and once again they have led by example.
Jasmine Pirini of Whitebait Connection helped Broadwood Area School students clean up roadside rubbish recently. The Year 4-7 students spent two days cleaning up roadsiderubbish between the Pawarenga/Panguru junction and the Kohukohu-Mangamuka junction.
By the time they had finished they had collected, sorted and recycled an extraordinary two tonnes of trash.
"It's been an amazing learning journey for my class and I this term, learning about our rivers, and doing something for our environment," teacher Catherine Semenoff-Murray said.
That had included last term's involvement for the Year 1-7 children in the Whitebait Connection programme, that gives students first-hand knowledge of freshwater biodiversity.
"Roadside rubbish removal and maintenance of the Rotokakahi River inanga spawning site were actions that students were able to achieve and contribute towards caring for local fresh waterways and the environment," Ms Pirini said.
