Bream Bay Swimmers at National Age Group Championships
Bream Bay's top six swimmers have just returned from a tough competition at the National Age Group Championships at the Sir Owen G Glenn national aquatic centre, where they competed for five days against about 700 of the country's top age group swimmers.

Top performer was Paul Linton, 17, who broke the Northland long course age group record in 100m back, taking the 2015 record set by Northwave's Matthew Gordon.
Paul made the B finals in all four of his events, 50m backstroke and butterfly, 100m and 200m backstroke, swimming personal best times in almost all events and winning the 50m backstroke B final. Paul's twin sister Rose placed 17th in 100m back and swam a personal best time to make the C final of 50m back, her last competitive swim as she retires from the sport.
Abby Wright, 14, swam personal best times in both her events to place 17th in 50m breast and 18th in 100m breast.
Rebecca Reade, 15, was 16th in 200m back and 24th in both 50m and 100m backstroke. Luca Matenga, 14, who just qualified at Division II Age Group Championships to swim at nationals was 16th in 100m breast and made a personal best time to come 22nd in 50m breaststroke.
Jackson Somner-Allen, 15, another Division II qualifier, was 19th in 50m back and 25th in 200m backstroke.
Waipu Golf Club had a busy two days starting on Friday with the Junior Top of the Harbour tournament which catered for a range of ability.
Waipu Golf's Kylie Jacoby and John Pennington organised the day with support from Vaughn Witten of Northland Golf and Paul Allen, who runs the schools junior golf programme.
Several youngsters played in the 18-hole section with handicaps ranging from plus 1 to 49, while another group played nine holes on the purple kiwi course and 10 children played two-person Ambrose with a time limit.
The youngest golfer was 4 years old – dad carried her clubs and then had to carry her back after completing six holes.
All children received a small prize, and there was also a lucky draw for a set of Cleveland junior clubs donated by Cleveland Golf and Golf Northland.
Saturday dawned fine and clear for the club's 84th anniversary mixed tournament, with 73 golfers turning up to tee off.
Waipu Liquor Centre sponsored the tournament and their gift baskets were well received by the winners, says Waipu ladies president Julie Gordong. The competition was all stableford with ties decided by countback. Ladies' winner was Suzanne Hansen and men's Doug Shadbolt.

Crazy Hat Party
This Saturday is Ruakaka Recreation Centre's Crazy Hat Party, so if you haven't organised some fantastic headwear, fold some paper into a pirate hat and get your ticket – contact ruakakarec@xtra.co.nz or call 432 7962.
There will be live music, prizes, a cash bar and finger food, as well as a courtesy van to take you home. The night is a fundraiser for the centre's multi-activity centre; tickets are $25 and cover the cost of food and live music.
Bream Bay Kindergarten will hold an open day tomorrow. All are welcome to come and check out the kindy and meet the staff between 10am and 2.30pm, an ideal opportunity if you have a preschool child nearly ready to start.
The kindergarten is on Peter Snell Rd, opposite the college entrance and beside the police station.
Last Call for Entries
Tomorrow is the closing day for entries in this year's Art 'n' Tartan wearable arts show.
This is just the paperwork, you don't need to have anything prepared, or even a title or description for your creation.
This is just letting the organising committee know of your intention to enter. So go ahead and download an entry form from the Waipu Museum website, or pop into the museum and pick one up.
This is also the closing date for mask entries, so if your child in Years 1-8 is keen to enter, fill in a form. Mask workshops for children entering a creation in Art 'n' Tartan will be held at Waipu Primary School throughout May.
