A boat has been almost completely destroyed by fire in the Bay of Islands.
Northland Regional Council harbourmaster Jim Lyle said it was "quite a serious fire" and the boat appeared to be beyond repair after the fire on Thursday afternoon.
"There was a fire on board and [the boatie] managed to get to a nearby yacht to raise the alarm," Lyle said.
The boat was at the mouth of Deep Water Cove when it caught on fire. The only person on board was uninjured.
The stricken boat was towed to Ōpua by another vessel, where firefighters were on standby.
